In-Office Visit Virtual ConsultationBefore a patient is allowed to undergo liposuction cosmetic surgery, their candidacy should be assessed and cleared by the operating surgeon. The surgeon will evaluate various aspects to determine candidacy during the pre-op consultations.
Dr. Wright Jones is a double board certified plastic surgeon providing liposuction to suitable candidates in Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and surrounding locations.
Who should or should not get Liposuction?
An ideal candidate for liposuction surgery is someone who has good general health, is within 25 pounds of their ideal body weight, and have stubborn fat pockets in certain areas of the body that have become resistant to diet or exercise. Women and men above the age of 18 who meet the basic health and fitness qualifications would usually make good candidates for liposuction plastic surgery procedure.
The following will typically not make good candidates for liposuction:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- A person with a medical problem that could interfere with the surgery or healing
- Individuals who are unable to quit smoking a few weeks prior to the surgery
- Patients using blood thinning medications or certain prescription drugs that they are unable to discontinue for the period leading up to and following the surgery
- People who have an allergy to lidocaine, which may be used in the procedure
Teen Candidacy
Liposuction may be approved for a teen in rare cases, particularly after a significant weight loss that may have left one or two lingering fat bulges. The cosmetic surgeon will assess the teen’s health, maturity, and self-esteem before recommending liposuction. Teens will typically have contour correction performed in one particular area to help with self-esteem challenges.
The teenager candidate may be affected by excess fat deposits below the chin, in the calves, hips, or other areas. If they feel acutely embarrassed among peers, liposuction may used selectively to eliminate unwanted fat tissue and provide a more sculpted and toned look.
Adult Candidacy
In liposuction, the upper age limit is not specifically defined, but the patient should be in good health in order to safely undergo this procedure. An individual may first consult with their primary care physician and then approach the liposuction surgeon if they are uncertain about their health and fitness level to receive this surgery.
People with a fair amount of skin elasticity will achieve more aesthetically appealing outcomes because liposuction will only remove the fat tissue, and not tighten the skin. Older people generally have more skin laxity issues than younger patients. Dr. Jones receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Stockbridge, Marietta, GA, and nearby areas for liposuction.
Realistic Expectations
Patients should be informed at the outset that liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, but a fat reduction procedure. It is also not designed to remove cellulite and stretch marks from the skin. Localized concentrations of fat in certain areas can be removed with this surgery.
Only about 10 pounds of fat or less is usually removed from the treated area. Patients with a positive state of mind, clear aesthetic priorities, and realistic expectations will generally make fabulous candidates for liposuction.
